Paid Proton VPN works haphazardly on iPhone

I bought the premium version of Proton VPN in September and since then have had nothing but issues. Quite often the internet connection drops on my iPhone 15 Pro (iOS is up to date) while the phone reports an active internet connection.
Similarly, when switching between a Wifi connection and 4G the internet connection drops inconspicuously. Switching to the app sometimes resets the connection but quite often I have to explicitly disconnect and re-select my preferred country to re-establish a VPN connection.
There is no discernable difference whether the phone is in power saving mode or not. The Proton app is permitted to run background services.
At this stage there is no way I would renew my subscription. Is anyone else having similar issues? Thanks for hearing me out.

I’ve just took on paid vpn account on iOS and had issues with it dropping and not re-connecting, after contacting their customer support it looks like it was because I had other vpn/norton products which meant the connect on demand in iOS settings was not selected, removed other connections and as above selected wireguard and so far been on a stable connection for a few days :crossed_fingers:

I also experienced this the first month of service (October for me), but it worked itself out in an update and has been working since then.

I have opened several tickets with Proton about this in the past. It is generally chalked off to being user error or my own devices… though, it ebbs and flows. Sometimes no problem. It tends to act up when there are updates available between either the app or the device.

iPhone 15 Pro user here and have no problems with the vpn connection . Even moving between WiFi and cellular. What I do have problems with is certain apps like my bank being completely blocked when I’m connected which is pretty cool.

ProtonVPN performance is all over the board for me too, no matter which settings or servers I choose. I usually can’t connect to the WIFI in my office and it often fails on public WIFI too.

Really bothers me that I have to maintain my ExpressVPN subscription just because of that.

I am on my 30th email with proton to try to fix all of the issues with the VPN. They have me send all kinds of screenshots and examples of how my apps don’t work and all the issues I’m having with their VPN they have done absolutely nothing. They just passed me on to somebody else. They’re just wasting my time I’ve spent so much energy sending screenshots and examples and they’ve done nothing so I am going to cancel my subscription.

Yeah, it’s total shit. Mine hasn’t worked basically ever and I’ve been a paid user for years. I use other proton services, but would NEVER pay for the vpn for iOS.

0 issues on a custom rom.

Thanks for letting me know, it seems a viable alternative. Will hold off for now because I gather when I want to switch between Proton servers I will need to install a new WG config.

yep. I also had tons of problems on ios. I used this method and works flawlessly now. Does this work with macos too?

U know that express vpn has been purchased from a ex former malware maker right? It’s owned from a company called Kape Technologies Inc. No thanks I will keep using my proton vpn subscription. No issues nor on my 15 pro nor on my samsung galaxy a20e.

Thanks for letting us know it’s not an isolated thing.

Thanks, there’s a consolation in knowing I’m not the only one experiencing this poc level app quality.

Vanilla iOS on mine.

Add as many server *.conf files as you want. You select then from the main page of the Wireguard app. Very easy.

I didn’t know that – thank you so much for the heads-up!

I was using iphone until recently and it worked flawlessly, maybe it’s the websites that you are visiting blocking the connection on detecting vpn? I am using an android rn and there too it works just fine. Same has been the experience for linux and mac!

Yeah, I hate that it is so non-functional on iOS. It works pretty well on desktop and everywhere else I’ve tried. I’ve basically stopped using it because of this. I’m always hopeful that proton will get it working and go back to check periodically, and as soon as I go on to do something and my app/page doesn’t load I know it is not working.

Ah, i use an android with a custom ROM on my phone, i don’t have a any issues with disconnecting. And yes, proton obviously needs background permission to stay connected to the server.
